Most people would agree that “cuteness” is one of the best qualities of the Pomsky breed.  However, I would add that it’s the “variety of cuteness” that is my favorite aspect of the breed.

The Pomsky is a cross-breed between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky.  As with all new cross breeds, the offspring usually end up with a combination of the physical looks of both parent breeds.  A Pomsky pup could look a lot like a Husky, or a lot like a Pomeranian, or anywhere in between.

Since the Pomeranian and the Husky are so different looking to start with, that “anywhere in between” means there is a HUGE number of variations in the physical characteristics of different Pomskies.

Over time, those variations lessen as breeders selective choose parents who posses the traits they desire, but, as of now, most Pomskies are being born in first-generation litters, making their physical variety more pronounced than almost any cross-breed seen before.

These physical difference show up in a variety of ways, but the three main ones are: coat type, body style, and color patterns.

Five Different Pomsky Looks

Since the Pomsky isn’t a member of any recognized kennel clubs, a consistent set of breed standards haven’t been set.  Despite this fact, or possibly because of it, the Pomsky breed appeals to a wide range of people.  With Pomskies, there is something for everyone.

While the number of different variations is truly “endless”, we have identified five broad categories that describe the look of most Pomskies.

Because it’s an inexact science, not every Pomsky will fit perfectly into a single category, but may overlap two or three different ones.

If you have a Pomsky of your own, or know someone who does, you’ll probably agree they could fit into one of the following five groups:

The Foxy Pomsky

The “Foxy” Pomsky typically combines the longer body of the Husky with the slim bone structure and frame of the Pomeranian.  To really exemplify the fox-like appearance they could have a long pointed nose and ears, and a smooth short reddish colored coat.

These Pomskies typically weigh around 20-30 lbs, but can be larger or smaller.

Typically very lean, they posses a sleek appearance and usually look more “fox-like” after being groomed or when wet.

This type of Pomsky is highly sought after and one of the most in-demand varieties available today.

The Plush Husky

When most people first think of a Pomsky, they envision the Plush Husky.  Small and compact like a Pomeranian, but having an even mix of Pom and Husky facial features, the Plush Husky is an adorable ball of fur.

Common traits of the Plush Husky can include:

  • Small stature (under 20 lbs.)
  • A Pomeranian like coat texture (Fluffy)
  • Husky color markings
  • A short broad nose and muzzle
  • A thick, curled tail

Most of the popular Pomsky pictures floating around the internet show this version of the breed.  Most breeders and owners desire these features due to their mass “cuteness” appeal.

As the breed progresses it is likely that this variation of the Pomsky will likely become the main strain among breeding stock and thus, become the standardized traits the breed is known for.

The Pure White Stunner

Gorgeous and classic, the Pure White Stunner is a less common variation of the Pomsky that is highly sought after.  The most obvious trait of this variation is their solid colored coat, and while most frequently coming in White, this variation also can be Black, Brown, Red, and Grey.

Additionally, this type usually (but not always) exhibits the following traits:

  • Solid colors
  • Larger frame size (25-35 lbs.)
  • Short, semi-course coat
  • Smaller more delicate facial features

Sometimes confused with other dog breeds, the Pure White Stunner can cause passers-by to stop and gawk even more frequently than normal.  Owners are often inundated with questions about what type of dog their Pomsky is, and where they can get one of their own.

The Blue-Eyed Brownie

Mesmerizingly beautiful, the Blue-eyed Brownie is a rarer variation of the Pomeranian-Husky mix.  Defined by it’s color pattern and eye color, this type of Pomsky is in high demand.

The stark contrast in color between the brown coat and blue eyes make this one of the most beautiful types of Pomsky.  The variety is contains the following traits:

  • Deep blue eyes
  • Brown coloring and/or markings
  • Semi-long double layered coat

The size variety in the Blue-eyed Brownie can range the entire spectrum from small to large.

Their stunning features are usually the talk of any room they enter, and they are almost always met with a chorus of “Ooohs and Ahhhs” when encountering new people.

Finding this variety of Pomsky can be difficult, as they are in high demand.  Even when found, be prepared to pay top price from a breeder, as they usually value these markings very highly.

The Short-Haired Cutey

Certainly the broadest category in this list, the Short Haired Cutey is variety that is defined mostly by coat type.  These Pomskies have a distinctly coarser coat that looks very similar to their Husky heritage.

Coming in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, these types of Pomskies are the most common and easiest to find.  However, that doesn’t mean they are any less cute, or any less appreciated by their owners!

The Short Haired Cutie can look very similar to a Husky, or can look like an even mix between the two breeds.  Rarely though, does it exhibit a majority of Pomsky traits and typically ends up closer to the Husky end of the spectrum.
